12 Weeks After Stem Cells: The Changes I Didn’t Expect

When I decided to try stem cell therapy, I had certain things I was hoping would improve.
I was particularly interested in my joints, inflammation, and overall sense of resilience. With a history of autoimmune joint pain, I was curious to see what, if anything, I would notice over the following weeks and months. What I didn't expect were some of the changes that showed up in areas I wasn't specifically watching for.
Now that I'm 12 weeks out, I wanted to share an honest update, not as a claim that my experience will be everyone else's experience, and not as proof that stem cells caused any particular change, but simply as a record of what I've personally noticed.
The lab result that surprised me most
The thing I probably thought about the least was my kidney function.
Back in 2012, I experienced an acute kidney injury after taking prescribed Celebrex for autoimmune joint pain. Since then, my creatinine has remained elevated. It has been one of those numbers I've simply learned to watch. At my most recent check, however, my creatinine was back in the normal range.
That was significant for me because I haven't seen it in the normal range since before my kidney injury. Was this caused by the stem cell treatment? I can't say that for sure. There are many factors that can influence creatinine, and one lab result isn't enough to establish causation. But it was unexpected, and because of my history, it was something I couldn't ignore.
I'm definitely going to continue monitoring it over time.
Flying without the joint pain
Another change became obvious through something I did several times over the last 12 weeks: traveling.
I took several flights during this period. Two were approximately 4–5 hours long. Another trip involved a 4-hour flight followed by a 13.5-hour flight.
Before my stem cell treatment, sitting for prolonged periods, especially on cramped airplanes, would leave me with worsened joint pain and usually limping too.
This time?
I didn't have that post-flight joint pain. That may sound like a small thing, but when you've lived with chronic joint discomfort, you notice when something that used to bother you suddenly doesn't.
My HRV has been interesting
I've also been watching my heart rate variability (HRV), and this has been one of the more interesting trends.
My HRV has generally been quite high during this period, often ranging between 100–150. I did notice it was a little lower during periods of travel, which wasn't surprising given the changes in sleep, routine, activity, and the stress that can come with traveling.
There was one very obvious exception. I developed a fever and viral illness, and my HRV dropped dramatically to around 15. Once I recovered, it returned toward my previous range in the 100s.
I don't interpret this as evidence that stem cells increased my HRV. HRV can be influenced by many factors, including illness, sleep, stress, recovery, training, alcohol, hydration, and travel.
Still, the patterns have been fascinating to watch. It's been interesting to see how clearly my body seems to respond to different stressors and how quickly those metrics can shift when I'm sick or outside of my normal routine.
My walking heart rate is also lower
Another objective change I've noticed is my average heart rate while walking. It's now approximately 10 beats per minute lower than it was previously.
Again, there are a lot of variables that could contribute to this: fitness, activity level, stress, sleep, temperature, medications, and more.
But it's a trend I've noticed, and I'll continue watching it.
Then I hurt my knee...
One of the most unexpected observations during this recovery period came after I injured my knee. I had significant knee pain, and my doctor suspected a torn meniscus. Normally, I'd expect something like that to take some time to settle down. Instead, it improved much more quickly than I expected, and I didn't end up needing an intervention.
Could the stem cell treatment have contributed?
I don't know.
It's tempting to connect the dots, especially when you're already looking for changes after a treatment. But I think it's important to be honest about what we know versus what we assume.
What I can say is that my knee hurt badly, I was concerned about it, and it recovered surprisingly quickly.
My hip and other joints
My hip feels good. And overall, my other joints have been doing quite well.
That may be the most meaningful part of this experience for me.
I have spent years paying attention to my joints: how they feel, how long I've been sitting, how much activity I've done, whether I'm having an autoimmune flare, and whether something is starting to hurt.
Right now, I’m simply noticing fewer of those day-to-day symptoms.
My energy has been good
My energy has also been good over these 12 weeks. I'm not experiencing the kind of fatigue or low-energy feeling that can sometimes accompany periods when my autoimmune symptoms are more active.
And importantly: I haven't experienced an autoimmune flare. For me, that is significant.
Again, I'm not saying that the stem cell treatment prevented a flare. That's something that would require much more evidence to determine.
I'm simply documenting what has happened in my own body since treatment.
What I'm taking away from the experience
Twelve weeks isn't the end of the story.
I'm continuing to pay attention to:
Kidney function and creatinine
Inflammatory/autoimmune symptoms
Joint pain and mobility
Exercise tolerance
Walking heart rate
HRV
Energy
Sleep and recovery
Overall quality of life
I’m approaching this as an opportunity to learn more about my body, my health, and how I respond over time.
